Discussion on Rosen’s article

Bullet points from our class discussion on Rosen’s piece:

  • Bloggers who write about the news still get their news from the mainstream media
  • Audiences are full of opinion, not necessarily fact; biased audiences can perpetuate erroneous content
  • Journalists are not the only gatekeepers anymore
  • Challenge to the financial stability of journalists
  • Time-shifting is a big factor – audiences choose when they want to consume the news
  • Online communities create echo chambers – extreme polarization of views, e.g. conservative and liberal
  • Journalists should take steps to involve the audience more, and also monitor and fact-check user-generated content
  • Being fair and balanced (presenting all sides of the story) is key, and a more realistic goal than total objectivity
